장애예술 미학의 명명과 주장
장애예술의 ‘접근성’과 ‘포용성’에 대한 담론에서, 장애예술 그 자체로 관심을 돌리면 어떤 일이 일어날까? 이 강연에서 캐리 샌달은 장애인의 신체, 정신, 감각의 특수성을 바탕으로 급진적인 타자성을 주장하는 장애예술 공연에 대해 이야기한다.
이는 ‘아웃사이더 아트’(일명 아르 브뤼*)와 혼동하기 쉽지만 다르다. 타자성을 띄는 작업들은 내용과 형식, 그리고 예술적 과정에서 장애 미학으로 알려진 새로운 경향을 나타낸다. 이러한 작업은 장애인 예술가들과 동료들이 문화예술의 주류 규범에 ‘순응’하려는 기대에서 벗어나 장애의 경험을 온전히 탐구할 때 무엇이 가능한지 보여준다.
아르 브뤼(Art Brut) : 다듬지 않은 거친 형태의 미술이라는 뜻으로 1945년 프랑스의 화가 장 뒤뷔페(Jean Dubuffet)가 만들어낸 용어이다. ‘원생(原生, raw) 미술’로 번역되며 날 것 그대로의 순수한 미술을 지칭하기 위해 사용한 개념

캐리 샌달
캐리 샌달은 시카고 일리노이 대학교 장애 및 인간 발달학과 교수로, 2009년 장애예술과 문화를 연구, 지원, 창작하며 장애의 경험을 탐구하는 연구실 UIC의 장애예술, 문화 및 인문학 프로그램(PDACH)을 설립했다. 샌달은 행사, 축제, 지지, 예술가 레지던시 프로그램을 통해 장애의 경험을 새롭게 조명하는 작품의 개발을 지원하는 단체들의 컨소시엄인 시카고의 Bodies of Work(BOW)를 공동 디렉팅하고 있다. 주로 공연과 영화 내 인종, 계급, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티와 교차하는 장애 정체성과 관련한 연구와 창작 활동을 하며, 저서로 공동 편집 선집 『소란스러운 몸 : 장애와 퍼포먼스』가 있다. 샌달의 글 <크립(crip)을 퀴어(queer)로, 퀴어를 크립으로>에서 영감을 받아 동일한 제목의 전시회가 2022년 베를린 슈불레스 박물관에서 열리기도 했으며, 2020년에는 샌달과 공동 작업자들이 장애 표현에 대한 시의적절한 비평을 위해 10년에 걸쳐 제작한 장편 다큐멘터리 영화 <코드 오브 더 프릭스(Code of the Freaks)>가 개봉했다.
Naming and Claiming Disability Aesthetics
What happens when we turn our attention from access and inclusion in the arts to disability arts themselves? In this talk, Carrie Sandahl discusses disability performance that claim a radical outsider status based on the particularities of disabled bodies, minds, and senses. Not to be confused with “outsider art” (aka art brut), these outsider works represent emerging trends in what is becoming known as disability aesthetics in content, form, and artistic process. This work shows what is possible when disabled performing artists and their allies fully explore the disability experience released from the expectations of “fitting in” to mainstream norms.
Art brut is a French term that translates as ‘raw art’, invented by the French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art. This is quoted from the website.

Carrie Sandahl
Carrie Sandahl is Professor of disability studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Department of Disability and Human Development. In 2009, Sandahl founded UIC’s Program on Disability Art, Culture, and Humanities (PDACH), which is a creative research lab whose members explore the disability experience through studying, supporting, and creating disability art and culture. Sandahl co-directs Chicago’s Bodies of Work (BOW), which is a consortium of organizations that support the development of new work that illuminates the disability experience in unexpected ways, through events, festivals, advocacy, and artist residency programs. Her own research and creative activity focus on disability identity as it intersects with race, class, gender, and sexuality in live performance and film. Sandahl is co-editor of the anthology, Bodies in Commotion: Disability and Performance. In 2022, Berlin’s Schwules Museum featured an exhibition called “Queering the Crip, Cripping the Queer,” a title inspired by her 2003 article of the same name that appeared in Gay and Lesbian Quarterly. In 2020, the feature-length documentary film, Code of the Freaks, premiered. Sandahl and collaborators worked on this film over a ten-year period on this timely critique of disability representations in cinema.
