보이지 않는 나라를 디자인하기

만약 완전히 눈이 보이지 않는 사람들만 사는 나라가 있다면, 그 나라의 사회는 어떨까? 사람들은 어떤 집에서 살고, 어떤 요리를 먹을까? 그 나라의 상징은 무엇일까? 법은 어떻고, 의사소통의 수단은 어떻게 될까? 그리고 예술이 있다면, 예술은 어떤 모습일까?

허버트 조지 웰스의 SF소설 『눈먼 자들의 나라』에서 영감을 받아 만들어진 워크숍 <보이지 않는 나라를 디자인하기>는 보이지 않는 사람들로만 구성된 가상의 나라를 만들며 장애와 디자인의 가능성을 엮어 우리가 당연하게 여기는 사회를 흔들어 본다.

1회차 : 그룹 토론
각 그룹은 시각 장애인과 시각 장애가 없는 모두를 포함해 6-8명으로 구성된다. 그룹별로 패션, 음식, 건축 및 의사 소통 방식 등 시각 장애인으로만 이루어진 가상의 나라를 디자인할 주제가 주어진다. 그룹별로 해당 주제의 전문가가 참여하며, 그룹 구성원과 전문가가 함께 주제와 관련된 이야기를 나눈다.

2회차 : 전문가 발표

1회차 워크숍에서 진행한 토론 내용을 기반으로 전문가들은 시각 장애인을 위한 나라를 구성하는 표본과 모형을 만들고, 2회차 워크숍 날에 이를 발표한다. 예를 들어, 건축가는 시각 장애인을 위한 학교 모형을 만들거나 요리사는 그곳에서 먹는 특별한 음식 메뉴를 구성해본다.

연사

이토 아사

도쿄공업대학 미래인류연구센터 디렉터
이토 아사는 도쿄공업대학교 혁신연구소의 미래인류연구센터 디렉터이자 MIT(2019) 방문 연구원이다. 원래는 생물학자를 꿈꾸었으나 대학교 3학년 때 진로를 바꿔 도쿄대학 대학원에서 미학예술학 박사학위를 받았다. 주 전공 분야는 미학과 현대미술이다.
주요 저서로 『눈이 보이지 않는 사람은 세상을 어떻게 보는가』, 『말 더듬는 몸』, 『기억하는 몸』, 『손의 윤리』 등이 있다. 그간의 연구 결과와 왕성하게 활동한 영향력을 인정받아 2020년 42회 산토리 사회과학과 인문학상과 2022년 제19회 일본 과학진흥회상 수상의 영예를 안았다.

Designing a Country without Sight

What kind of society would it be, if there was a country composed only of the blind? What kind of houses would the inhabitants live in? What would be the national dish? The country’s symbol? Its laws? Means of communication? And assuming there would be art, what form would it take?

Based on H.G. Wells’ novel the Country of the Blind, the workshop aims to create a fictional country composed exclusively of individuals with no full vision. Through this workshop, we seek to challenge the society we take for granted by weaving a narrative of disability and design possibilities.

Day 1 Group Discussion

Participants will form groups of 6-10 which includes both visually impaired and non-visually impaired individuals. Each group will be given a topic to design a Country without Sight such as fashion, food, architecture and communication. An expert related to the topic will support the group’s discussion.

Day 2 Presentation by Experts

Based on the discussions of Day 1, the experts will create samples and models to embody a Country without Sight. On Day 2, the experts will present them. For example, the architect might build a model of a school in a Country without Sight, or the chef might create a specialty dish there.

Asa Ito

Director of the Future of Humanity Research Center at the Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology

Asa Ito is the Director of the Future of Humanity Research Center at the Institute of Innovative Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology. She has also served as a Visiting Scholar at MIT in 2019, with a specialization in aesthetics and contemporary art. Originally, Ito aimed to become a biologist, but she switched to an arts degree in her third year of university, and obtained her Ph.D. in from Graduate School of Humanities and Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo.
Dr. Ito is an accomplished author, known for several significant works, including "Me no mienai hito wa sekai wo do miteiru no ka" (How Do People Without Sight See the World?, published by Kobunsha), "Domoru karada" (The Stuttering Body, published by Igaku-Shoin), "Kioku suru karada" (The Remembering Body, published by Shunjusha), and "Te no Rinri" (Ethics of Hands, published by Kodan-sha). Her outstanding contributions to her field were acknowledged with the prestigious 42nd Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities in 2020. and 19th Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize in FY2022.
